Aerial Dreams

I decided that it was about time for me to make another Deathmatch map. What I came up with is Aerial Dreams, my best map up to date; it's a lot better looking but barely more fun and actually less playable than sykotrny2. I think I can make this a fairly short review, since its hard to talk long about space maps. First off, I will start with the map's looks. It is very hard to detail a space map in my opinion. There are a lot of textures and all available, but due to the expected openness of the map, you cant really have walls or a ceiling, so there goes about half of the things you have left to detail. So instead what you must do it make detail lights as well as detailed floor shapes/patterns. This map has slanted curves and borders as well as other complex shapes. Lamps are found often, and the textures are consistent. I had to take off a couple of points for looks just because I think that it could probably be given a little more detail. I got varied responses when I first showed this map to friends, including "It's too cramped to walk in" (that guy is obviously used to playing in horizontal maps, lol), "Nice map", and "Whoa, how the F--- did you do that?!" I supposed for the most part I was pleased with the general response. Here's what they dont know. I made this baby in ONE DAY! I admit that I spent about 6 hours working on it that day, but it did only take one day! =) Moving on, I had to take some points off for aesthetics. Usually, I would give a perfect score in that area to any space map, but the bottom level of the map which has the red armor happens to be difficult to reach from any other point on the map. It is possible to jump to it from the Rail platforms, but sometimes you fall. The map consists of 3 main levels to play on (four if you count the quad ledge) and two railgun platforms on the sides. The railgun platforms are very special in this map because they provide the only access to the quad damage platform and also access to the lower level and some heavy armor..... if you dont fall! =) The map's second ledge is the main ledge in the level. It is home to the rocket launcher, ammo, and some +5 healths and armor shards. It has jump pads that lead to the upper level. The upper level can be compared with the upper level of Q3DM17, in the sense that It has accelerators on either side that bounce you to the opposite side. There is also a yellow armor there as well. There are shotguns up on the top level, too. The only thing left is the quad damage wayyyyyyy up above, and like I said before, it can only be reached from the railgun platforms on the side. If you look at the screens, you can see most of this. Now, I took off a few points from aesthetics because the linear accelerators on the upper level get in the way, and it is hard to reach the lower level. I guess you were right, Brian..... =) As far as playability goes, the map supports 2-6 players, just like most space maps do. It flows well as a space map, but is meant to be played strictly vertically. No, there isnt much space to walk around. There's not supposed to be. The action is supposed to be almost entirely jump pad, meaning you do more bouncing around than walking around. The action does keep going though. Except for the high death count due to natural causes, the action flows very nicely, and there will always be somebody shooting at you. I had to give Fun Factor an almost perfect rating just because the map is so fun! With the number of bounce pads, human and AI movements alike are unpredictable, meaning that you must be ever-alert in order to take the victory (especially against tougher opponents). Actually, you have to be alert all the time or else you will find yourself reduced to a little red splotch on the bottom of the map. Wait, no, you cant even see the blood down there. But it has to go somewhere..... =) Nevermind. I think this is a space map worthy of an A" rating! My suggestion to you would be to download it and at least play it once, if you dont get hooked. Its kinda like those potato chips, ya know? "Betcha cant eat just one!" Well, I betcha cant just play this map once!" lol. Thats all for this review.
