syKotic's
Lair -- In a Nutshell
syKotic's
Lair was an idea I had long ago but never really had the
impetus to start. To tell the truth, I was so into designing
maps for Quake 3 Arena, that I completely forgot about making
and maintaining a web page. But now my mapping activity
has died down a little, so I decided to make this site.
One note about this site. This site is NOT about the game
quake 3 arena. It is strictly about designing maps for
Q3A. So, if you're looking for cheats or console commands,
let me tell you right now, you arent gonna find them here.
This site has two major sections where my actual content
is located: Map Downloads/Reviews and Mapping Tutorials.
When I was looking for tutorials on quake mapping, I found
VERY few, and about one or two of them were good enough
to teach myself Q3Radient (the quake 2/3 map editor) from.
When I saw this, I had the idea to write my own tutorials
as soon as I got comfortable with the editor. It's been
about a year since I first downloaded the editor, and I
am very comfortable with using it. So, I decided to start
syKotic's Lair. However, I have a number of maps that I
would like others to download and play as well, so I added
a section in which I reviewed maps, and had downloads for
them. I dont only review my maps, but other peoples as well.
My map reviews section comes complete with a full page (or
longer; yes usually longer lol) review on the map, as well
as a personal rating of the map and a link to download it.
For more information on this section, click the link on
the left. My tutorials section is by far the most important
section of the site, simply because it is the sole reason
that this map was made. I know that there are a large number
of people out there that play ID's or other people's maps
and say, "Boy, I wish I could do this." Well,
today is your lucky day, because with persistence, my tutorials,
and your creativity, you can create maps just like the best
of them. Dont be fooled by the word tutorial, either. A
tutorial on this site is for someone who is a beginner at
a certain skill, not at using the editor as a whole. If
you get to a tutorial called "Complex Curves",
which talks about curve thickening and vector editing, you
are most likely fairly comfy with the editor. But "Complex
Curves" might be the next tutorial in line for you
to tackle, and its only called a tutorial because you are
new to the skill and are beginning to learn it. I want people
to learn how to make maps, because I love to see other people's
maps. My hope is that they will do that through use of my
site, or even another persons site about quake mapping.
That's all for syKotic's Lair --
